About the Journal

Open Islamic Studies is an Asian, peer-reviewed, open-access journal dedicated to advancing scholarly understanding of Islam and Muslim societies in Asia. The journal provides an academic platform for rigorous research on the intellectual traditions, religious practices, institutions, communities, cultures, and contemporary transformations that characterize the diversity of Islam across Asian societies.

Asia is home to highly diverse Muslim communities and some of the world's most significant traditions of Islamic scholarship, education, spirituality, culture, law, and social organization. Open Islamic Studies seeks to make this diversity more visible within international scholarship by encouraging research that examines Islam within its historical, social, cultural, political, educational, philosophical, and contemporary contexts.

The journal welcomes theoretical, empirical, historical, textual, philosophical, legal, ethnographic, and interdisciplinary research in areas including Qur'anic and Hadith studies, Islamic theology and philosophy, Islamic law, Islamic education, Islamic history and civilization, Muslim societies and identities, religious institutions and authority, Sufism and spirituality, Islamic economics and finance, Islam and politics, gender and family, interreligious relations, Islamic culture and arts, digital religion, artificial intelligence, and other emerging areas of Islamic studies.

Open Islamic Studies welcomes contributions from scholars worldwide, provided that the research has a clear and substantive connection to Asian Muslim societies, communities, institutions, traditions, or intellectual contexts. Comparative research among Asian countries and Muslim communities is particularly encouraged to illuminate both the shared characteristics and distinctive expressions of Islam across the region.

Through rigorous peer-reviewed scholarship and open access to research, Open Islamic Studies seeks to strengthen the international visibility of Islamic scholarship from and about Asia and to promote critical, inclusive, and academically grounded dialogue on the continuing development of Islam and Muslim societies in the region.
